Tom Robinson Personal Life

Tom Robinson Life

Contrary to his self-identification as homosexual, Robinson has had previous interactions with women and claims to have always made it obvious that he enjoyed both men and women.

He now self-identifies as bisexual but previously used the term ‘gay,’ which is equivalent to ‘queer,’ to refer to the broader LGBT population. He considered the word ‘bisexual’ to be a euphemism.

Tom Robinson Professional Career

Robinson relocated to London in 1973 and became a member of the acoustic trio Café Society.

They made enough of an impression on Ray Davies of The Kinks that he signed them to his Konk label and produced their debut album. According to Robinson, Davies’ other responsibilities prolonged the recording process, and he quit the band after the album sold barely 600 copies.

As the Tom Robinson Band was performing at London’s Nashville Rooms, Robinson noticed Davies enter and cynically sing The Kinks’ song “Tired of Waiting for You.” Davies replied with the unflattering Kinks track “Prince of the Punks” about Robinson.

In 1982, Robinson wrote the song “War Baby” on the divides between East and West Germany and collaborated with producer Richard Mazda on his debut solo album North by Northwest.

War Baby” reached No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart and spent three weeks at the top of the UK Indie Chart, restarting his career.

His next song, “Listen to the Radio: Atmospherics,” which he co-wrote with Peter Gabriel, debuted at No. 39 in the UK Singles Chart and earned him additional revenue when Pukka Orchestra covered it in 1984. The Pukkas’ rendition, titled “Listen to the Radio,” was a top 20 success in Canada.

In October 2015, he released “Only The Now,” his first new album in two decades. It included Billy Bragg, Ian McKellen, and Lee Forsyth Griffiths.

It was created with Gerry Diver, an award-winning producer, and multi-instrumentalist, and published on his own Castaway Northwest Recordings.

Tom promoted the record that summer by performing at several festivals, including Glastonbury, Latitude, Wickham, and Green Man. He headlined a showcase in London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in September, followed by a 15-city tour in October and November.

Robinson was also honored with a BASCA Gold Badge that month. It was in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to British music.

Robinson filled in for Radio 2 DJ Johnnie Walker on his Sunday broadcast Sounds of the Seventies in late 2018 and early 2019.

Robinson began a four-night solo acoustic tour in 2020 before embarking on a 22-date UK “70th Birthday Tour” with a five-piece band.
