If you’re anything like us here at The TV Junkies you can’t get enough of Orange is the New Black’s Season 3 breakout star Ruby Rose. Thankfully we’ll be able to get another look at the Australian actress when she guest stars on the July 24 episode of SyFy/Space Channel’s Dark Matter.
Rose joins the crew of the ship as “Wendy in Episode 7 where we end up opening up a box and discovering an entertainment model Android,” Dark Matter co-creator Joseph Mallozzi previews. “Ruby was terrific,” he says and this new type of Android will be in stark contrast to Dark Matter’s resident Android played by Zoie Palmer. Mallozzi says Rose’s Wendy is “the total opposite to our practical, shipboard Android. She can cook. She can sing. She can dance. She can play games.”
These differences may lead to some trouble on board the Raza because of the fact that “the rest of the crew just completely falls in love with her, much to our Android’s chagrin,” says Mallozzi. He tells of one scene in particular that highlights this tension.
“There’s a scene where our Android comes into the mess hall and everybody’s sitting down and enjoying a meal that Wendy the robot has prepared and ignoring our Android. Our Android is like ‘Hey, I increased the efficiency by 15%,’ and the crew’s response is like ‘Congratulations but she improved the taste of our food by 110%,’” recalls Mallozzi. “It’s very much like when you’re in elementary school and your best friend suddenly has a new friend,” he says.
The show also put Rose’s Aussie roots to good use. Mallozzi says that “Ruby was great and we had her keep the Australian accent and we worked it into the character. It was a little gag at first and then it leads to one of the most fun scenes of the season.” He went on to preview that particular scene, which once again involved Palmer, by saying “I won’t give too much away but it involves Zoie and she was brilliant.”

Another aspect of Rose’s appearance was that the role required her to do a lot of stunt work. “She was super jazzed about playing the character, but also doing a lot of stunt work as well,” Mallozzi says. He also tells us that because “she does a lot of stunt work in this episode,” that Rose “had so much fun that she was telling me when she goes back to LA she was going to enroll in a stunt course.”
Does that mean there are more action adventure roles in Rose’s future? Only time will tell there, but for now be sure to catch her as Wendy the Android on Dark Matter’s July 24 episode at 10 p.m. ET on SyFy and Space Channel.
