Kent Dana Professional Career

Kent worked for KOOL Radio and Television in 1972. He then performed a two-year mission in Uruguay for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He continued his education at Brigham Young University, where he studied broadcast journalism and worked at a Provo radio station afterward.

Following college, Kent worked at gas stations before becoming a weekend anchor for KOOL-TV. His big break came in 1979 when he was hired as Channel 12 News’ male evening anchor. He held that position from 1979 to 2004 before heading to CBS 5 in 2005 to anchor for five years.

He spent 25 years with Valley station KPNX (12 News), rising to a nightly news anchor position. During that period, Kent covered national political conventions, Evan Mecham’s impeachment, wildfires, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the O.J. Simpson trial.

He switched to CBS 5, another Valley school, in 2005. Kent spent six years with the station as a news presenter until resigning in 2011.

After winning many Emmy Awards, Kent was inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was presented with the Rocky Mountain Emmy Governor’s Award in 2018. Dana thanked one of his co-anchors and seasoned producer, Julie Frisoni Shumway, for his achievement.

Shumway and Kent cooperated for many years, creating two of Kent’s most celebrated films, Wednesday’s Child and Silent Witness.

Wednesday’s Child is a collaborative effort between Aid to Adoption for Special Children and Wednesday’s Child. To help adoption efforts, he profiled and listened to youngsters in the foster care system.

Kent would joke about and laugh with the children, oblivious that he was thoroughly enjoying the conversations.
