Woodcroft was recruited as an assistant coach by the San Jose Sharks in July 2008, reporting to head coach Todd McLellan.
On April 20, 2015, the club announced that head coach Todd McLellan, assistant coaches Jim Johnson and Jay Woodcroft, and video coordinator Brett Heimlich, had decided to “part ways.”
The Edmonton Oilers hired her and Jim Johnson as assistant coaches on June 25, 2015, reuniting them with newly appointed head coach Todd McLellan in Edmonton. Woodcroft was named head coach of the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers’ American Hockey League club, on April 27, 2018.
On February 10, 2024, the Oilers announced the dismissal of Dave Tippett and the appointment of Woodcroft as head coach.
He played for the College of Alabama-Huntsville in the ECHL, the Jackson Bandits in the UHL, the Missouri River Otters, the Flint Generals in the WCHL, the Anchorage Aces in the CHL, and the Corpus Christi Ice Rays in the CHL. He worked for five years, from 2000 to 2005.
