While enrolled at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, he began training in Mixed Martial Arts. Ray Elbe also learned Vale Tudo from WEC bantamweight veteran Del Hawkins before Macahdo Purple Belt Steve Hochuli taught him Jiu Jitsu.
